Abstract
The object of this study is to determine optimum conditions for ultrasonic degradation of chitosan in terms of reaction temperature, solution volume, chitosan concentration, type of solvent, and ultrasonic time. The degradation rate of chitosan has been found to be greater at lower reaction temperature, lower volume, and lower concentration in 1% acetic acid solution for a given ultrasonic time. Degradation was increased rapidly during the first 6 hr of ultrasonic time, and then slowly approached an asymptote with prolonged ultrasonic time. But ultrasonic degradation decreased the molecular weight while maintaining degree of deacetylation of degraded chitosan. The initial rate constants were in the range of 0.87~2.90¡¿10-3 S-1 at various ultrasonic conditions, and activation energy was 64.72 kJ/mol.
